Relationship Studio Project
2014-2016
“Relationship Studio” is the name of a discussion group, which was launched by another graduate student from Taipei National University of the Arts and me together to arouse discussion on labor within art production, and also, to broaden the discussion through the exhibition and workshop method. The naming of “Relationship” and “Studio” separately indicates “the re-connected relationship between laborers by way of group discussion” and “the continuously moving status of the discussion”. The idea pop out during the early stage of this studio, since there weren’t enough budgets to rent a real space, our discussion took place randomly and frequently upon the instant messenger app in the cyber space, at our own private place, or those idle space around campus.
In 2014, a discussion on value-allocation inspired me to reflect on “an alternative side of art-production labor system beyond the artist individuals”, and undertook to sort out the personal files of members in this labor system. Till 2016, “Relationship Studio” has accumulated 2 series of documents, and developed them into exhibitions separately afterwards—“When can we have the ability to produce our very first domestic car on our own?” and “Good Bye Mr. Jiang ”. Within the process of cooperating on these projects, our members gradually came up with respective solutions which might work better than “a discussion group” to deal with the art labor issue. Eventually it was after we finished the exhibition of “Good Bye Mr. Jiang ” that we decided to have “Relationship Studio” temporarily suspended.
